No Torture 10.000 this year
February 11, 2007
The Torture 10,000 bike ride has been canceled for 2007 – so says PWTC the club that sponsors the ride. There goes my primary goal for the year. My intention was to do this ride only if I weighed less than 215. It was my “reward” for getting my weight and blood pressure down, and my fitness and health up. I’m bummed, but stuff happens in life. Time to move on.
This isn’t a total surprise to me. I have been getting weird vibes that something was up for about a month. The magazines and websites that usually publish events for the year have started coming out, and this ride was conspicuously missing. I even spoke with to my uncle about it on Friday, and we started talking about back up plans. There is one in particular that really intrigues me, but I don’t know enough about it to declare yet.
I will take on having a new goal figured out by the end of the week. No doubt a bike and at least one mountain will be involved.

Bummer. Remind me, what was the distance of the 10,000?
Karl.

It was a century ride. Basically 70 miles of up and 30 miles of down – with a total elevation gain of over 10,000 feet.
PWTC is creating a new ride that may replace the Torture 10,000 – but it’s called the Mt. Hood Hooha. Now I ask you – would you rather build your season around a ride with the word Torture in it or with the word Hooha in it? Somehow the new ride just doesn’t seem gnarly enough…

That’s too bad your ride was cancelled. I am sure you and your buddies will come up with another challenge.
I agree The Mt Hood Hooha just doesn’t sound as cool!

I don’t know…Hooha sounds like a pretty good reward to me. Lose the weight and get more Hooha!

Why don’t you just do it anyway? Just because the formal ride has been canned doesn’t mean the route has disappeared. Go DO it!

I considered doing the ride anyway. But one of the main reasons I liked that ride was I thought it had one of the coolest looking jerseys (in addition to being a tough ride).
If it becomes just a tough ride, then I have a lot of new options to consider as well. So far I have three other ideas that I’m discussing with my uncle (my riding buddy).

Hey Phil, want a tough race? How about an Ironman!

First I have to read your total immersion stuff and find out exactly how totally immersed I can be and still breath.

You might want to check out Bikes ‘n’ Brew. It’s a century with a fair amount of climbing (though not 10,000 meters, I admit) – Portland to Hood River via Mt. Hood and 4 microbreweries. We also stop at Joe’s Donuts in Sandy.

I tried looking this up on the net and couldn’t find it. What is the website?
