Making progress on my running
I am now officially two full weeks into running. Today I ran for 32 minutes straight and covered 3.1 miles. So far running is going way better than I thought it would. I expected it to take weeks of running/walking before I would come anyway near running 1/2 hour straight.
I also felt I could have probably gone faster if I had wanted. I ended up running with an average heart rate of 158 and a maximum hr of 171. For a 45 year old guy, those are respectable heart rates this early in the year. I am estatic that I felt like I could push it harder if I wanted, and that I can maintain that level of hr comfortably. A couple of years ago I was probably at my best cycling, and one thing I noticed was that I could sustain a 170 hr going up hills. That was during the summer, when I tend to be much more fit. A few more months of training like I’ve been doing – there is no reason I shouldn’t blow away my prior best rides.
Another thing I noticed was my resting hr this morning. I really shouldn’t even call it my resting hr, because I had been up for a few hours and had already gone to the gym with my daughter to practice volleyball. But I was sitting around and I took my pulse, and it was 66 beats per minute. For me that is low – and one more sign the workouts are paying off.
